What is Xylazine?

  • It is a sedative or analgesic that is FDA approved for use in veterinary medicine , especially for large animals
  • It is not approved for use in humans
  • Also known as "anestesia de caballo" in Puerto Rico and "tranq" in the United States

Why Should I Be Concerned About Xylazine?

  • It is not approved for use in humans
  • There is no way to reverse a Xylazine overdose in humans, but it mimics an overdose caused by opioids
  • Narcan does not reverse this type of overdose. However, Xylazine is commonly being mixed with opioids
  • Can cause open wounds regardless of how it is put into the body, leading to infections and possible amputations of limbs
