[ARCHIVED] RENSSELAER COUNTY MOURNS PASSING OF VETERAN SERVICE AGENCY DIRECTOR PETER GOEBEL

NASSAU NATIVE WAS A U.S. ARMY VETERAN AND GRADUATE OF WEST POINT

Rensselaer County is mourning the passing of Peter Goebel, who served as director of the Rensselaer County Veteran Service Agency, County Executive Steve McLaughlin announced.

Goebel passed away this weekend after a battle with a serious illness.

A native of Nassau, Goebel was a veteran of the U.S. Army, retiring in 2012 at rank of Colonel. He was a 1981 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 2020, he was inducted into the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame.

He had served as director of the county VSA since his appointment in 2014. As Veteran Service Agency Director, he helped secure benefits, assistance, guidance and support earned by veterans. He was also active in organizing the monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran ceremonies at the county and other events to honor veterans.

“Peter was a great friend to all in Rensselaer County and a tireless advocate and defender of our veterans. He was also a great patriot who believed deeply in the principles of freedom and justice. We mourn his passing and the loss of his leadership and friendship,” said County Executive Steve McLaughlin.

“Peter capably served this country with our military over the course of four decades and provided valuable service as our Director of the county Veteran Service Agency. He ensured our veterans receive the support, respect and appreciation they have earned and deserve,” continued McLaughlin.

“Rensselaer County has vowed to never forget the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families. Peter Goebel helped our county stay true to that mission, and his efforts and concern helped provide needed services and assistance to many veterans and family members,” said McLaughlin.

“Peter is a member of a well-known and respected family. His late father Henry served for decades as Nassau Town Justice, and his late mother Alice helped educate residents about local history and the importance of the Constitution with various civic groups. His brother Jon today serves as a member of the Nassau Town Board. The Goebel family has made a major contribution to our county, and we extend appreciation for their contributions and sympathy for their loss. Godspeed Peter Goebel,” concluded McLaughlin.
